The story of Rivers of Hope began on ordinary walks past familiar streets, where our founder kept meeting neighbors who were hungry, cold, and overlooked. Those faces stayed on her heart during long workdays, bus rides, and quiet prayers. A church invitation to serve at a food bank during COVID turned concern into action. Sharing meals, hygiene items, and listening ears soon became weekly rhythms, then a clear calling to build something rooted in faith, dignity, and hope.
As the volunteering deepened, it became clear that people needed more than a warm plate. They needed someone to remember their names, pray with them if they wished, sit with their grief, and walk with them through re-entry, addiction recovery, or long hospital seasons. Guided by Christian faith, Rivers of Hope grew into a ministry that offers both prayer and practical support, weaving together food, counseling, workforce resources, and community so neighbors experience care for body, mind, and spirit.
What started as one woman carrying bags of food uptown slowly became a registered 501(c)(3) with a wider reach. Step by step, we added community events, resource referrals, grief and emotional support, and workforce guidance for people rebuilding after prison or hardship. Each new program reflects stories we have heard on sidewalks, in shelters, and at church altars. As we grow, we keep our focus on relationships, integrity, and empowerment, and we invite you to walk this journey with us.
Rivers of Hope is led by our founder, Lynn Obiero, a Black woman whose journey began on crowded uptown sidewalks, where she kept meeting neighbors who were hungry, tired, and unseen. Those encounters stirred her heart during long workdays and quiet prayers until a church friend invited her to serve at a food bank during COVID. What started as sorting cans and handing out plates grew into carrying food, hygiene kits, and encouragement directly to people on the streets, in shelters, and in transition.
Step by step, Lynn's faithful yes turned into a registered 501(c)(3) shaped by Christian values, where every program is built around dignity, relationship, and hope in Christ. Her story keeps our ministry grounded, practical, and close to the people we serve.
